Biography
Kazem Bakian-Dogaheh was born in Rudbar, Guilan (Iran). He received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran, in 2017. He received the M.S. degree in astronautical engineering and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Southern California (USC) in 2023 and 2024, respectively. He is currently a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan since 2025. He completed his Ph.D. under the guidance of Mahta Moghaddam in the Microwave Systems, Sensors, and Imaging Laboratory (MiXIL) at USC. His previous research work contributed to developing microwave instrumentation and modeling approaches to help unravel the carbon-water cycle dynamics of permafrost soils and their influence on climate-driven vulnerabilities of the Arctic for the NASA Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) campaign. His research interests include synergies of microwave remote sensing and earth system models, earth system observation technologies by introducing new radar and microwave imaging measurement concepts, and the role of electromagnetics in medicine for thermal therapy applications and monitoring.
He is the recipient of the 2018 – 2022 NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF), 2022 IEEE Antenna and Propagation Society (AP-S) Fellowship, 2022 Ming Hsieh Institute Ph.D. scholarship, and 2023 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) Student Prize Paper Award (3rd Place). He is the founding chair of the IEEE GRSS student branch chapter at USC, for which he received the IEEE GRSS chapter excellence award in 2023.
