Ruzbeh Akbar

Biography

Born in High Wycombe, United Kingdom, Ruzbeh attended Montgomery College in Rockville MD, USA, in 2003. He then received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from The George Washington University, in Washington DC, in 2009.  He joined the Moghaddam group in 2009 back in University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and received his M.S. in Electrical Engineering in December 2011 from UM’s Radiation Laboratory.

Following the groups transition to USC in January 2012, Ruzbeh followed suite and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree. His primary research interests are forward and inverse Electromagnetic modeling for remote sensing applications, especially Soil Moisture remote sensing. His current focus is developing an integrated Active/Passive soil moisture retrieval algorithm, utilizing both Radar and Radiometer Spaceborne measurements. This work is directly related to NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive, SMAP, mission.

Other research interests and work in progress include in situ vegetation (trees, crops, etc.)  dielectric measurements and measurement techniques, electromagnetic scattering models for trees, microwave emission modeling from forested areas. Ruzbeh has chosen the middle ground between Radar Remote Sensing and Radiometer Remote Sensing. He has also regularly participated in many multi-scale field campaigns, from ground truth collection (CanEx’10 & SMAPVEx’12) to wireless sensor node deployment and forest radar measurements.

Ruzbeh is a member of IEEE, IEEE-GRSS and AGU. He is also a recipient of NASA’s Earth and Space Science Fellowship, NESSF, from 2010 till present (2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13).
